The one right now is spring bud green and so tiny it is struggling to navigate the clear down of my kneecap. This morning one dashed across my chest, confident perhaps, that I was still asleep. And I had been. I squashed him before fully lucid (which I would avow under oath). He was smeared beyond recognition. It will be a closed casket.
I paddleboard every calm morning. And every calm morning, when Iβm far from land, I feel a little tingle on my leg. I can never tell if that little tingle is a droplet of water or a creepy crawly. Itβs usually a creepy crawly. A spider. A beetle. A gnat. I let them crawl. They are just made afraid by their sudden change of circumstances: one minute living their lives on the beach, the next adrift. I can sympathize.
Yesterday, on my paddle, I discovered a fleet of junebugs bestrewed across the placid water. They floated well but motility eluded them. Apparently, parent junebugs do not instruct their offspring in the art of the breaststroke. I scooped up and rescued each one. How many lives have you saved in the last twenty-four hours? I was the dolphin to their shipwrecked sailor. After drying out in the morning sun, I was the redwood to their Julia Butterfly.
They say kids that torture cats become serial killers. What do grown women that rescue bugs become?
The junebug God,
Jen
P.S. Apparently, someone in London gets stabbed every 58 seconds.
Poor guy.

I love Kindle Vella; the stories are super fun and fast. Also, Jen, the joke is sublimely funny!
